As soon as you know you are going to be a mother soon, you are showered with lots of advices about what to eat what not to eat. What is good for you and your baby.

Often new mother get confused what is right or wrong for her and baby.

Let’s have some points on this topic what is good for a new mom and her baby.

Your health depends on what you eat and drink and your child’s nutrition starts right from the womb!! So it’s really important for any pregnant woman to EAT RIGHT and HEALTHY, to avoid maternal and child complications during and post delivery.

Let me clear one most prevailing myth i.e. “you should eat for two now!!!”

No that’s not needed, you should eat how much you want to less or more, it’s your body you knows how much food you and your baby need.

Important point to remember are:

  • Balanced healthy diet is most important, especially the micro nutrients like fiber, fluids, vitamins and minerals
  • Regular exercise (as per your doctor’s suggestion)
  • Physical active lifestyle
  • Stress free mind

All these points keeps you healthy and helps you in prevention of pregnancy disorders like:

  • High maternal weight gain
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Pre-term delivery
  • Big baby and many such complications that can affect lactation part a big way

To avoid all such complications it’s important that pregnant woman and her family understand how much the DIET is equally important as any medications and supplements.

Good quality antenatal diet helps in production of good quality breast milk post delivery!!

First it’s most important to know-

“Exclusive Breastfeeding is not a choice, it’s a responsibility!!”

Exclusive Breastfeeding is mandatory for new born, irrespective of the mode of delivery and the post delivery diet. What is lagging today’s scenario is women’s self determination and busy life to do exclusive breastfeeding.

Diet during Lactation, common facts and myths.

Myths

  • A LSCS mother would not be able to breastfeed because she was nil stomach
  • Water intake should be strictly restricted for the mother
  • Mother should not eat pulses, certain veggies and fruits which may affect the baby’s health and digestion
  • Certain food indulge in LSCS suture healing
  • Plenty of ghee based and dry fruits desserts will enhance milk production

Facts:

  • Any new mother can do exclusive breastfeeding irrespective of her mode of delivery and her diet status
  • Plenty of fluids is mandatory for the mother to enough hydrated to do feeding 24/7
  • Balanced diet of all food groups is mandatory to keep the mother away from constipation, to cope up with blood loss, to be nutritionally healthy enough to nurture one more life

Lactation Foods :

  • Plenty of protein based foods like pulses, legumes
  • 4-5 liter of fluids per day excluding juices
  • Iron rich foods like GLV, ragi, soya, pomegranate, watermelon, poha etc.
  • Milk and milk products, 1ltr / day
  • It’s important to avoid more of simple carbs to avoid mother taking additional calories
  • No dieting till the mother completes 6 months of exclusive  breastfeeding

Lactation Golden Rules :

  • Exclusive breast feeding till 6 months of age and continue till one year minimum and if possible 2-2.5 years
  • No formula milk or cow’s milk till one year of baby’s age
  • Never use feeding bottle

Stages and types of Breast milk

colostrum yellow colour milk which secretes in the first three days after delivery.

  • It is rich in IGA antibodies which has anti-infective actions.
  • Lactoferrin,which is immunomodulator, also has tropic action on intestinal growth.
  • Casein having anti-adhesive property.
  • Oligosaccharides- prevents bacterial attachment.
  • Cytokines- Anti-inflammatory.

Foremilk and Hindmilk- milk which starts secreting after three days of delivery.

  • Rich in carbohydrates, fats, proteins, growth factors, enzymes and nucleotide.
Benefits of breast milk to the infant:
  • Best possible nutrition to infant.
  • Reduces the chances of chronic disorders like insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, childhood cancer , obesity and overweight, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease.
  • Reduces the chance of acute infection like diarrhea, otitis media, urinary tract infection, necrotizing enterocolitis, septicemia, infant botulism.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding for more than six months is an independent predictor of better medical health through childhood and adolescence.
  • It also improves the cognitive development of the baby, studies have shown Breast fed babies have better IQ then non-breast fed babies.

Benefits of Breast milk to the Mother during Lactation:

  • Skin to skin contact of the mother and the baby increases the bonding.
  • Breastfeeding releases oxytocin hormones, which helps in reducing the size of uterus faster and thus reduce bleeding post-delivery.
  • Breastfeeding also releases prolactin hormones which keeps the mother relaxed and helps her to sleep better.
  • Breastfeeding enhances the weight loss post delivery.

 Long term health benefits for mother:

  • Reduces the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer
  • Also reduces the risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Reduces the severity of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis.

Contra-Indication of breastfeeding : 

  • There is no absolute contra-indication of breastfeeding.
  • Relative contra-indication are –  HIV positive status of the mother, full-blown active tuberculosis and herpes infection of the nipples site.

Now as we all know now days there are lot of people who are ready to give free advice to a new mom, and their comes lots of myths too. Let’s know what doctor have to say about the myths.

Myths about breastfeeding:

  • colostrum should be discarded well it the power House of immunity and should definitely be provided to baby.
  • Even after breastfeeding baby cries because it is not getting enough milk -baby cries does not always mean hungry baby, it generally cries for warmth of mother
  • Baby needs water apart from breast milk – mother foremilk contains enough water and so baby does not need any kind of external fluid for its healthy survival.
  • Mother cannot breastfeed when she is sick – mother may breast-feed even when she is sick.
  • Mother has to stop breastfeeding if she conceives mother can continue breastfeed just taking care of her nutrition.

Multigrain coconut Jaggery cookies

Now my girl is grown up from baby to toddler and she loves munching on cookies and I am happy , she enjoys them and just make sure she had some healthy munching when mom and Adya both are happy 😀.

So we made one more healthy cookies for her and mommy daddy too. We all love eating these healthy cookies anytime .

Sharing my easy recipe for these cookies

INGREDIENTS

120gms Multigrain flour ( Mix of whole-wheat flour, Ragi flour and Jwar flour)

70gms jaggery (grated or fine jaggery)

75gms Ghee ( clarified butter )

1 tsp cardamom powder

70gms designated coconut

1-2 tbsp milk ( if needed)

(You get all the organic products used here )

PROCEDURE

✔ Add ghee and jaggery in a bowl and whisk well until creamy. 

✔ Now add all the dry ingredients in this creamy mix.

✔ Combine all with a spatula.

✔ If you feel it’s little dry and not combining then you can add one or two table-spoon milk so that a dough can be formed for making small balls.

✔ Make small balls and slightly flatten it with fingers.

✔ Now coat these balls with little more Coconut and place them on baking tray.

✔ Now preheat the oven at 160-170 and bake these cookies for 12-15 mins, keep an eye and bake till it’s golden brown. ( I have baked in Microwave convection mode, please see temperature as per your oven. )

✔ Take out the cookies tray and let them cool in tray or wire rack as they are soft and can break.

 

Your yummy healthy cookies are ready to eat, you can store them in air tight container and enjoy munching any time.

Strength and Bonding with ANMOL BABY CARRIERS!!

At times I think I will really miss these cuddles and warmth of her, holding her close to me all times gives such a relief as my baby is safe in my arms. It’s a soothing way for mom and baby both when you both.
Baby wearing with baby carriers build a strong bond between us and as a mom it has given me strength and confidence, make me independent as now I can handle her alone and all the work too.

Can’t thank Baby wearing enough as I was able to keep my baby happy and close, enjoying all moments and my life too.

We used a soft towel as insert for her as SSC should be used when baby is 7kg or you can use insert/soft towel.

For my surprise she was happy and we had a society walk and within few minutes my girl was sleeping peacefully in her carrier.

From then we never turned back and our carrier become the most important part of every day life, living in nuclear family we have to balance all alone from kitchen to market and when it’s hurry time and you have a cranky baby crying for carry the best support is carrier just hold them close and you can relax and do all your work while your baby sleeps in your arms.

✔ You can start baby wearing from first month itself as early as day one and can wear as long as your baby like it.
✔Carrier should be ergonomically safe – carrier should be comfortable for both wearer and baby, weight of baby should be equally distributed on shoulder, back and waist of wearer and baby should be sitting comfortably. Their spine should be supported and baby is sitting in M position where hips are below knees.
✔ Fabric- choosing wright fabric is equally important as it should be breathable, so that air flows to the baby. Handwoven fabric is really good.

✔Padded straps and waist is also important as it provide comfort to wearer and baby legs too.
✔Good quality buckles as to ensure baby safety.
✔Nautral colours should be used for fabric as at times baby use to put carrier in mouth.
✔ If you can get extra small pockets it is really good for keeping any necessary items on the go. Anmol carrier have small pockets and I really found it useful.
✔ Easy to wear.

Pregnancy

A woman’s body is a blessing and I adore every woman for being so special to give birth to a new life.#Adorewomenhood Sharing some moments of motherhood from the first day of pregnancy.

Pregnancy a period of nine months when you nourish a baby inside you and it’s only a mom who is able to feel what going inside her.
From first trimester when she can’t feel any movements just by test she knows her baby is inside and all she can feel is pregnancy hormones with vomiting, mood swings, nausea, headache and fatigue going through all she is just happy as she knows she is going to be a mom soon and at 6 weeks the first time she heard her heartbeat was the best moment and then 12 weeks and she was able to see her baby’s little hands, legs moving but she yet can’t feel her …watching her baby and her happiness flows in tears.
Slowly moving to second trimester …bit easy one..baby is strong enough growing slowing within her..she can now feel little flutters when baby moves like bubbles and as second trimester ends baby is becoming stronger and big and mommy can feel her moving in her tummy, baby and mommy both enjoying this phase.
Third trimester started with more strong kicks awesome feeling..when you can see your baby moving in your tummy🤗slowly she is becoming strong and heavy and a little hard for mommy to walk, sleep..acidity takes over..and it’s time baby wants to come out…with a lot of hard times and happy memories mommy hold her bundle of joy in her hands🤗
Looks like a period of nine months, but for a mom it’s a life long change. She can tell you even moment of her nine months as she had lovely memories attached to every moment.

  • Rear facing car seats for infants until they complete one year, weight wise 10 kg. Keep using the rear facing position until the baby meets the weight and height measurements as per manufacture’s instructions.
  • You can move to forward facing once the baby meets age limit and height that would be 10 kg and above when your baby is one year or above.
  • You can move to booster seat with shoulder strap once kid is 4-year-old around 18 kg.

Installing car seat

  • Do not rush to install car seat first properly read the instruction manual provided with car seat .
  • Check your baby weight and height.
  • Best place for car seat is back seat as front seat have aribags and in case of unforeseen circumstance airbags will push the car seat.
  • Once installed properly check the seat belt and tighten it.
  • Check the tilt position according to baby. Car seat comes with different tilt position setting according to baby age.
  • You can check the car manual for proper information to place and install car seat.

Baby safety and comfort

  • Place your baby in-car seat and buckle up the straps.
  • The harness straps should be snug fir at baby shoulders.
  • The waist and shoulder straps should give a proper fit, not too loose nor too tight that baby feels uncomfortable.
  • Car seat position should be according to baby weight and age.
  • Do not use extra features that are not provided with car seat as head huger, comfort straps and trays, it can affect baby safety.
  • Don’t but anything under or beside baby if it’s cold, you can put blanket over the baby once he is properly seated in-car seat.
  • Avoid extra and fluffy clothes when baby is in-car seat, as it is uncomfortable.
  • Do not leave your baby alone in-car seat when you are leaving your car.
  • Keep a look when to change car seat according to baby age, weight and height.

Diapers are an essential part of a mom’s life, but we really need to think about the environment now.

Disposable diapers are bad for the environment as they contain ingredients that could harm animals, humans, and the environment. As winters are here all our sweaters and jackets are out, as a mom now I am worried about her to protect her from cold season as the changing weather is new for them and can get cold easily, so the question that always come to my mind was how many layers of clothes my baby should have for winters?

Sharing some winter tips for baby clothes.

✔Layering of clothes is important but make sure how many layers you are putting.

✔Babies normally require one extra layer of clothes of what we wear. You can add one inner with warmer inside to keep them warm inside house and while going out add a jacket or sweater according to temperature outside.

✔You can check your baby toes and belly too if it’s warm then your baby is overdressed and if it’s cold then you need to provide one more layer to give the warmth.

✔Extra layers not only affect baby movement but extra protection affects baby immunity too.
✔It happens as their body needs to learn adjusting according to changing weather to build strong immunity, sudden weather change might affect them easily.

✔A warm oil massage accompanied by warm water bath is good in winters helps to keep them warm and good sleep too.

✔As baby grows and start eating, we can add healthy foods that builds immunity and keep baby warm in cold season.

We are in Bangalore and weather changing not too hot and not too cold so need to take care of her, all these tips really helped me in winters hope it will help you too.

Traditionally homemade and organic

Organic and handmade food is our first choice for babies, but making it is time-consuming long process. Still as a mom we always try to give best and put all efforts to make the best for our little ones.

✔MILLET & SPROUTED MULTIGRAIN HEALTH MIX

Ingredients-

pearl millet, little millet , sprouted ragi,sorghum, peanuts, barnyard millet, foxtail millet, kado millet, Sago , sprouted horsegram, almonds, pista, cashew, cardamom , dry ginger,roasted gram, sprouted green gram, sprouted wheat, red rice.

How to prepare

✔Add 2 tbsp of mix to water/milk and mix without lumps.
✔cook mixture for 10-15minutes on medium flame.
✔Add any fruit puree or jaggery for sweetness.
✔Can add ghee also.
